It’s been busy here. Kara got off work at 2:00PM and has been baking ever since. Pies, jello salads, marinating the turkey, devilled eggs, the list goes on. The smells are amazing.
As it’s been getting harder for me to travel for even short distances, my family will be staying put and having a dinner with our close friends and possibly Kara’s dad. I did say possibly, didn’t I?! We’ll have 15 people in our home, sharing good food and company. It should be great fun.
We’re trying something new this year and that’s deep-fried turkey. We’ve had it once before but this is the first time that we’ve done it on our own. It has an amazing taste and the injectionable marinade really adds lots of flavor. Did I mention the pumpkin cheesecake? Amazing stuff!
My family wishes all of you a Happy Thanksgiving. Our prayers and thoughts are with you. All those serving in the military, our prayers are with you. We’re deeply indebted to you and the sacrifice that you’re willing to make on our behalf.
What a night! It took Kara almost 4 hours to get five kids ready since all costumes were handmade. Josiah decided that he was too old to participate as well as wanting a $50 costume of Master Chief from Halo that his cheapskate parents wouldn’t buy for him!
Kara and the kids were gone for almost 2 hours and when they returned, the kids were hopped up on candy. The nice thing was they were asleep within a 1/2 hour and didn’t wake up for the rest of the night. Now that makes for a happy papa!
Here’s those pics I promised:

I’ll admit, I’m not. Usually I’m a big fan of the ghoulish day, but this year I think I’m taking a break. How can I do that with six kids, you might ask? Well, my wife is still very excited about it and while I’m writing this blog, she’s doing some crafty project with the kids to help them get even more excited about this otherworldly holiday. In fact, Kara is wearing pajamas to work tomorrow. I guess everybody is dressing that way tomorrow. Whatever. Continue reading
I’m happy to say I met another Doddema. Eltje and his wife, Geesjen, is my 4th cousin once removed. I ran across him while googling Doddema. Although I’m still learning about him, it seems he’s a composer and has a few albums to his credit.
I’ve been able to add more information to the Doddema history which is always exciting. I love meeting new family members. Now I’m hoping I can get some more Dutch recipes.
My wife’s Aunt Linda came to visit. Have you ever had one of those aunts that you feel you can just talk about anything with her….like she’s your best friend? My wife does and that’s why I feel so comfortable considering her my own aunt.
