Did people in your neighborhood decorate with lights? Did some people really go “all out” when decorating? Any stories involving your ancestors and decorations?
My mom loved lights. If there was a place to string it, she would. If there wasn’t, she would make one! We always had Christmas lights that surrounded the entire house hanging from the gutters. In the 1970’s, the only light to hang outside was the those big bulbs. I loved how they stood out and looked forward to coming home late at night just to see those lights! Mom also made this giant felt Santa Claus that hung on the front door usually with a sleigh bell on the door knob.
During my youth, most everybody decorated their house with lights and mangers were a common scene. Today, anything signaling the approach of Christmas seems foreign. There are a few houses on our block that have lights on the house, one with their shrubs covered in lights. Kara and I always make sure we have a giant wreath on our front door with lights that cover at least the front part of the house. Luckily for us, someone had left nails by the gutters to hang our lights.
Remember those big lights from my childhood? Take those and add LED bulbs and you have super amazing lights! Brings back the memories of youth and costs less to operate. No more watching the electric meter spin around!!
One of my all-time favorite Christmas movies is National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation starring Chevy Chase. Here’s a little video that someone put together featuring the theme song and how they decorated their house for the season!
I’m amazed by how much we’ve forgotten of our own history – if you noticed, I did include myself. Here’s a little clip to give some perspective on the Pilgrims and the hardships they went through. After watching it, ask yourself what might have happened if the Pilgrims were held personally responsible for their own shelter/food from the very first moment they landed? Would those first two years be different?
This YouTube video is a an excerpt from CNN (believe it or not). It’s a brief portrait of a 12 year old girl who claims it is her faith that allows her to paint as the masters. She also taught herself to play piano and now composes her own music.
I’m pretty excited about this. Although I’m a huge Star Trek fan, I’m sort of a Star Wars nut as well. I have to get every novel that is released and heaven forbid if I don’t read them in order! I remember my parents taking me to Star Wars: A New Hope when it first came out. We went to the drive-in (now those are memories). I think I almost peed my pants when I saw Darth Vader for the first time but I was from then on hooked on sci-fi.
The latest SW movie should be no different. It may be animated but I imagine the storyline is anything but childish. The past minisodes of Clone Wars met with rave reviews. I expect nothing less with this movie.
Following the movie, the animated TV series. Yes, that’s right! This is going to blow the droids cartoon back in the 1980’s out of the water! Of course, only those hard-core and older fans remember the made-for-TV SW movie aired during the Christmas season. I can’t remember if it was late 70’s or early 80’s (kinda a blur).
Don’t let this event pass you by. As I mentioned, it may be a cartoon but the story is anything but.
I love Battlestar Galactica…especially the revised version. I’ve been a pretty loyal fan from the very beginning. While I still loved watching, the viewing hours were atrocious. 11pm is seriously a bad time. So I started to just watch the DVD sets. I was fine with that. Then came the long break between the end of Season 3 and the DVD release and I mean longggg!!!!!
Two weeks before Season 4 began, the boxed set was finally released. My wife and I sped through it preparing ourselves for the final season. We had a BSG party to celebrate the Season 4 premier. Then my wife and I slacked off a couple episodes and decided to watch it again when it finally came out on DVD.
With our move, we had satellite installed with a HD DVR for the express purpose of recording BSG’s final season. Unfortunately, it appears that BSG is on midseason hiatus….until…..January 2009! What?!!!!! Utterly ridiculous!!!
I guess Sci-Fi channel knows they have us and although we, the viewers, will complain…we’ll still watch.
