This Tombstone Tuesday brings an unknown. Somebody (I wish I knew who) provided me with this photo of an urn. I’m having problems reading it. The only thing provided with the photo was “schoterhof”. Does that mean anything?

So genealogy detectives, the game is afoot. Who is this missing relative?

Update 8 May 2010:

Along with the help of Henk Doddema, we’ve been able to figure out that her name was “Gonnie” Doddema. She died in 2002 and was cremated. Her urn is kept at the Yarden Crematorium Schoterhof in Heerenveen, Friesland, Netherlands. She was married to an Oosterwerff but we have no further details. Gonnie appears to be a nickname; again nothing concrete.

Please keep us updated on the mystery of Gonnie Doddema.

Searching for Ellie Doddema

Legacy.com has a death record for Ellie Doddema. Nowhere in my research do I find this name? Anybody?

Here is the available information:

Birth: 9 Feb 1912
Death: 27 Mar 1913
Cemetery: Lincoln Township
Level info: Grundy County Iowa Grave Records

Where’s the Doddema?

Sort of like Where’s Waldo but with a Doddema twist. Looking for a certain Doddema….list it here. Hopefully, people will write in and share what they know.

To kick it off, here’s the lucky ones we’re looking for.

Where’s Jared and Jillian Doddema?

From doing Google search, it appears that in 1999 Jared was a sophomore at Iowa State University (ISU) studying horticulture. In 1997, Jillian Doddema finished 6th in the 800 meter run for Central Missouri.

So, let’s help find these missing relatives!

Interesting turn of events. I’ve recently been contacted by Robert and Jennifer Dodde pertaining our common ancestor, Egbert Dodde. Egbert is my 4x cousin twice removed.

I’m still waiting their replies regarding additional information such as dates, locations, names, etc. but I think I may have hit on a jackpot here. I also did a quick Google search and found another site that had information on the Dodde name but I’ll save that for another time.

How many Doddema’s in the Netherlands?

I’ve often wondered how many Doddema’s are in the Netherlands. I don’t know how accurate the service is but FamilieNaam shows about 205 Doddema’s still living in the Netherlands. Pretty cool.Â Now if only I could get them all to contact me!

Found…Jan Doddema

I was doing my weekly search for the Doddema name on Google (I’ve found this is a great resource to contact other members of our family) and found Jan Doddema. Now I need to contact him and ask his relationship to me but I have a website and a YouTube video of him. He’s a singer and I thought everybody would enjoy watching him perform.

Hopefully, we’ll be hearing more from Jan Doddema.

Need headstone photographs

First off, I’m not trying to be disrespectful. Headstones are wonderful “tools” for tracking genealogy. Believe it or not, it gives me a sense of peace to know that they’re there. It’s something concrete that I can rely on. It makes it more “real” to me.

If you find that you have photographs or know that I’m missing one, please send them to me so I can include them in the album that I have in the Gallery.

Searching for…Kirsten Doddema

Another item I found on Ancestry.com was a reference to a worker named Kirsten Doddema. It appears in the late 1950′s she worked on a few boats going to Venezuela and Aruba. Anybody have any idea whom she is and who she’s related to?

Send me whatever you got! I’d be interested to learn more about her.

Looking for more information on Elso (Elzo) Doddema

Every once in a while, Ancestry.com has one of those freebie trials that they like to parade around. I took advantage of it this time and was pleasantly surprised to see that they’re were a few Doddema’s listed. What excited me the most was seeing the passenger list with my father’s name on it when he arrived in America! Now that’s cool. Of course, since I don’t have a membership, I can’t save the document but I plan on taking a trip to the Family History Center and using their access to get the records. Aha! Another individual that I found was Elso Doddema. Ancestry.com has him listed as Elzoo Doddema but the dates correlate as does is wife’s name. It looks like something is different with the children but I can look into that. If anybody has any information on Elso and Manna Doddema, along with their offspring, I would greatly appreciate it.

Family history is fun and I hope to get more of you involved in the process. For those of you that have helped, thank you. It’s been a blessing and a privilege to work with you as well as get to know you better.
